‘Dossier’ comes from the French word for “back,” ’dos,‘ and originally meant “back of a chair” (“part of a chair against which rests the back”). Later it came to mean “file” or “bundle of papers” by analogy with the shape. (via @PeterSokolowski @Dr_Dico)
