During the Gold Rush, the native Tlingit people on Admiralty Island in SE Alaska sold their homemade liquor to local prospectors. Over time, the island’s Tlingit name—Xootsnoowú, or ‘Hoochinoo’—eventually morphed into HOOCH, a slang term for especially strong or illicit alcohol. (via @HaggardHawks)
