
Because of their high potassium content, bananas are faintly radioactive. The BANANA-EQUIVALENT DOSE is a means of comparing this radioactivity to other sources of radiation—so 1 banana = 1 BED; a chest X-ray = 200 BEDs; and 10 minutes in the Chernobyl reactor = 500 million BEDs.
