A PUPPY was originally just a small dog or lapdog, and in that sense derives from ‘poupée’, the French word for ‘doll’. It did not come to refer specifically to a young dog until the 1600s—replacing the more usual term at the time, ‘whelp’. (via @HaggardHawks)
