The broad, rounded base of an egg is called the DOUP. If something is TOOM, then it’s empty. ‘Better half an egg than a toom doup’ is an old Scots expression meaning ‘be thankful for what you have, if the alternative is that you have nothing’. (via @HaggardHawks)
