Word of the day: “carotenoids” - the class of pigments causing the yellows, oranges & reds in autumn leaves. Carotenoids are present year-round but as photosynthesis dwindles each fall, chlorophyll decays to disclose the furnace colours concealed by green. 📷 Shirley Hirst (via @RobGMacfarlane)
