French scholar Jean-François Champollion was born #otd in 1790. He used the Rosetta Stone as a key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Rosetta Stone is inscribed three times with a royal decree – in hieroglyphs, Demotic (the native script for daily use) and Ancient Greek. (via @britishmuseum)
